New vineyard planted
20th May 2011
The latest vineyard was planted at Hush Heath last week bringing the total vineyard area to 28.86 acres/ 11.72 hectares. The new vineyard is 5.5 acres/2.5 hectares in size and named Middle Strackney Wood.
Previously an apple orchard, the site has been tile drained, sub-soiled and remained fallow for the last 2 years in anticipation of the planting.
The row orientation has been changed from our previous vineyards to north – south due to its narrow shape, giving long rows (less tractor turning etc) but mostly in order to help the drainage of cold air and frost from the site.
Proportions of the 3 varieties have been changed with Chardonnay making up 50% of the plantings and also being planted at the top of the site in order to protect it from frosts - it appears to be the most sensitive to spring frosts. Pinot Noir will make up 30% of the plantings, these will include some Burgundian clones for colour and flavour. The proportion of Pinot Meunier has been increased to 20% reflecting the results from the winery, which suggests that the grape is rather more interesting than is supposed. Out of interest a couple of hundred of old traditional Champagne varietals Petit Mesilier, Arbane and Pinot Blanc have also been planted.
